Ok imma stop, don't want to make it look like I'm completely dissing SS2, it's still one of my favourite games. There's a ton of weird, often almost softlocking pitfalls - especially for modern players. But it features even more janky and unintuitive elements than DX, which says a lot. SS2 holds a special place in my heart and I think it's more atmospherically impressive. But DX is overall more diverse in how players can express themselves.Īs for the "better" part. Of course SS2 is still an ImSim and offers some moments of side story-impacting choice through direct action or inaction. There's also no dialogue system and therefore no dialogue-based choices. ![]() It's hard to mix up your playstyle - resources and firepower are so scarce that you mostly stick with what you picked at the beginning. ![]() System Shock 2 offers less choice: you can't really sneak past enemies except when obtaining the invisibility power (which is also in DX) and I don't remember many hidden routes that bypass foes on your main path. ![]() I took your title as "which if them is more genre-defining" but your text implies you meant "definitive" as in "better".Īnyways, I think it's Deus Ex.
